Episode Notes

What agents think they need: speed, shortcuts, and simple answers. What they really need? Clear expectations, consistent support, and strategic partners who know the industry inside and out. In this first episode of The Spirited Agent, Jason Combs and Matt Zelenik pour up a hometown favorite—Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye—and dive into the real-world struggles agents face. From contracting delays to case management chaos, and from carrier overload to client skepticism, the duo delivers candid insights (and a few spicy truths) on how to thrive in the modern insurance world.

This episode is a call to slow down, get intentional, and leverage the support that’s already within reach.

Key Takeaways for Life Insurance Agents:

  1. Set better expectations. Clients are used to Amazon Prime speed—insurance is not that. Be honest and proactive about timelines, especially when APS or underwriting delays arise.
  2. Contracting delays are normal. It’s not you—it’s the system. Add 2–3 weeks to your mental timeline and communicate that to your client early.
  3. Master a few carriers. Don’t chase the cheapest rates. Build deep relationships with a handful of carriers to streamline your processes and service.
  4. Case management is a beast. Your case managers handle dozens of back-and-forth emails per case. A simple update from you to your client each week goes a long way.
  5. You don’t need to know everything. In fact, saying “I’ll ask my team” builds more trust than pretending to be the expert in every area.
  6. Technology is catching up—but still costly. Don’t try to buy every tool yourself. Partner with groups like Millennium to leverage enterprise-level tech (think: $100K+ tools) without the price tag.
  7. Educational events work. Hosting webinars with experts positions you as an authority. Even if clients don’t attend, they associate your name with leadership in that space.
  8. There’s opportunity right now. From rising interest rates to upcoming tax code changes, clients need proactive planning. Talk about annuities, disability insurance, and legacy planning while you have their attention.
  9. Be intentional. Create a model for your business. Pick your marketing channel. Commit to it for 6–12 months. Connect with people—not just pitch.
  10. Legacy is the real product. You’re not just selling policies. You’re helping clients protect wealth, pass it on, and leave a meaningful legacy.
